Job Summary

Caltech Athletics looking for dynamic Sports Information Director to lead messaging efforts for a department on the move!

Caltech Athletics is in the midst of an ambitious revitalization that has seen all 16 programs break numerous records in recent years, with three teams achieving national Top-25 rankings and several others earning regional rankings, multiple All-SCIAC and CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition. Working with exceptional scholar-athletes at the nation’s most selective university, we strive to provide a high-quality co-curricular, true Division III amateur opportunity as a valuable component of our close-knit community’s academic experience. We compete in one of Division III’s most competitive conferences, the SCIAC, which has boasted eight team and 15 individual national championships over the last five years as the premier conference in the West region.

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Sports Information Director is responsible for keeping statistical records, promoting, publicizing, and celebrating Caltech student athletes and coaches endeavors and accomplishments; creating and implementing an appropriate public presentation of our department to the internal, local, national and international communities; be an outstanding liaison, role model and communicator for the value of intercollegiate athletics and this department. This is a full time, exempt position, with the expectation to work nights and weekends in an overall balanced work week and year.

Job Duties

  • Collect, verify, record and report all official game and individual statistics, results and records to SCIAC and NCAA for 16 D3 intercollegiate teams. Organize and maintain the archives of Caltech athletics.
  • Responsible for many aspects of home game management for all sports. Including: a) obtain scorers, timers, statisticians, and PA announcer as necessary; b) coordinate live stat and video streaming program in an equitable and high-quality manner; c) ensure game officials greeted and required paperwork collected; d) assist and coordinate game management supervision program implemented by head coaches; e) produce game day program in appropriate format.
  • Publicize and celebrate the achievements of Caltech student athletes, coaches and program through game summaries, feature articles, season preview and summaries in a variety of print, electronic and video formats. Lead contact with media outlets; work closely with Institute Marketing and Communications staff.
  • Responsible to produce excellent photography and videography of student athletes/teams for use in variety of settings, purposes, and publications.
  • Curator of the department website in all aspects. Create and execute an appropriate, coordinated social media strategy to promote Caltech athletic teams and the activities of the entire department.
  • Produce information needed for the annual all-sports awards banquet (May) and Hall of Honor selection process and induction (October).
  • Responsible to keep the Caltech Athletic Identity by communicating the elements of the style guide to department members and assist them in appropriate use of our mark, logos, and visual identity. May approve all merchandise/uniform art requests that seek to use athletic identity marks/color.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Strong general computer, software, technology and specific database management skills.
  • Proven ability to be organized, multi-task effectively, prioritize emerging tasks appropriately, work independently and within a collaborative team.
  • Strong managerial skills, will supervise a largely student work study staff to execute game operations. Above reproach in integrity, awareness of all legal and ethical responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cultivate positive relationships with every level of the organization through excellent problem solving and conflict management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to serve as a positive health and fitness role model for the entire community including a positive enthusiastic, optimistic outlook, can-do attitude, collaborative professional.
  • Physical work environment, must be able to lift 50 lbs. or more on a regular basis, each day is filled with physical tasks, event set up, carry towels and equipment in a variety of capacities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in sport management, journalism or a related field.
  • 3-5 years professional experience in related field.
  • Collegiate sports information experience.
  • Handyman skills preferred..
