Who We Are:

The Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science communications team is adding an innovative, creative and enthusiastic storyteller to their dynamic team of communicators executing an internal and external communication strategy that positions the college as the world’s premier computing and information science institution. The Science Writer will report to the Director of Communications and help tell the story of groundbreaking research at the interface of technology with engineering, medicine, policy and the cognitive, behavioral and social sciences.

What You Will Do:

The incumbent will research, write and edit content that will support college-wide internal and external communications, including news articles, features, newsletters, presentations, columns, brochures, promotional and website copy, along with other materials. This individual will demonstrate expertise in writing and editing content as well as possess excellent problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles and produce top-quality content while also meeting deadlines. The individual needs to be an expert collaborator who can work across the communications team; Cornell Bowers CIS; and with university-level colleagues.

They will also manage and update a database with faculty expertise and research, and, working closely with University Relations’ Media Relations team, train and identify faculty experts to participate in external media requests leading to top-tier story placement and media attention for the college.

What We Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 3-5 years of journalism experience and/or or equivalent combination of education and communications experience
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading as well as research and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with, and comprehension of, writing about computer science, statistics, data science, and technology
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging written content on variety of topics under constrained deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated creativity and ability to handle multiple projects while meeting concurrent deadlines
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with key constituencies
  • Prior experience following and generating story leads and conducting interviews to develop content
  • Creative problem solving and the ability to network and build positive relationships with a wide variety of individuals within the College and University
  • Knowledge of AP style writing and editing

  • Undergraduate or graduate studies in related science fields
  • Experience working in an academic environment.
  • Science writing and general news writing skills
  • Experience with Drupal and WordPress
  • Experience with audio and/or video editing
