Here, everyone matters and you will be a vital contributor to our inspiring, bold mission. As an Associate Director working on the Sustainable Innovation & Life Sciences Leadership team, a typical day will include:

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

The Associate Director, Executive Communications (50%) and Science Philanthropy (50%) will partner with the Head, Sustainable Innovation & Life Sciences Leadership (SI&LSL) and the R&D Communications team to develop a differentiated leadership platform for the President, R&D and deliver thoughtful communications that connect and engage various external and internal audiences. He/she will also lead efforts to develop and execute a discrete Science Philanthropy program for the global R&D organization.

EXECUTIVE COMMUNICATIONS (50%)

The Associate Director will ensure that strategic communications are crafted and executed across multiple communication channels (e.g., town halls, roundtables, external keynote or panel presentations, Q&A sessions, leadership conferences, media engagements, etc.). This person will be a trusted communications partner and will provide sound counsel on all communications matters, ensuring high-quality work across print, digital, web, and social media.

SCIENCE PHILANTHROPY (50%)

The Associate Director will be responsible for finalizing and executing a strategic plan for Science Philanthropy and community engagement, which is a newly formed group within the SI&LSL group. Priorities in year 1 include the establishment of giving “pillars,” overseeing the creation of all internal and externally-facing materials and governance. He/she will also be responsible for instituting reporting processes for all philanthropic activities and coordination with the US CSR and Global CSR teams to ensure alignment and coordination on potential enterprise-wide programming.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

EXECUTIVE COMMUNICATIONS

  • In partnership with the Head, Sustainable Innovation & Life Sciences Leadership, establish an internal/external storyline and messaging platform for the R&D President
  • Partner with internal/external communications colleagues to identify, pitch, place and support executive engagement activities
  • Provide internal communications support to R&D Management Committee (RMC) members on special projects and global R&D organizational announcements
  • Develop day-to-day communication deliverables for R&D President including, but not limited to: announcements, presentation materials, email messages, speaker’s notes, social media posts, etc.
  • Measure effectiveness of executive communications; continually modify, innovate and improve to deliver maximum value for the intended audience

SCIENCE PHILANTHROPY

  • Crystalize vision for R&D Science Philanthropy and Community Engagement including finalization of year 1 plan while developing longer-term (3-5 year) vision and roadmap.
  • Execute year 1 plan and define measurements for outcomes
  • Serve as primary contact for all external inquiries
  • Collaborate with global corporate social responsibility, global corporate communications, public affairs, business units and site communications ensure alignment and execute programming
  • Manage all aspects of Takeda/New York Academy of Sciences’ Innovators in Science Award planning and execution
  • Build awareness of and support for Science Philanthropy programs internally and externally
  • Contribute to the development of employee giving, volunteering and pro bono engagements, and grant/sponsorship program management strategies
  • Provide guidance and inspiration for employee engagement and community engagement aspects of programming
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships to support forward-looking and creative insight on thought leadership and future initiatives
  • Ensure the integrity of global philanthropy strategies and thought leadership

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelors degree – BS/BA Majors in Journalism, Communications or public policy/public affairs preferred.
  • A minimum of 8+ years with demonstrated increased level of responsibility of professional experience required at a corporation or consultancy with an understanding of the role of the political environment in the industry and its impact on Takeda business (patients, physicians, payers and products)
  • Strategic business partner with the ability to translate business information into language that external audiences, employees and partners can understand.
  • Excellent communicator, able to persuasively convey both ideas and data, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to negotiate and form consensus among various parties important.
  • Ability to work in a global and highly matrixed ecosystem (internal and external) with a high degree of complexity
  • Ability to identify areas for process and systems innovation and implement change that will enhance the overall effectiveness of programming
  • Ability to build strong partnerships and drive role clarity with other interfacing Takeda functions, including but not limited to R&D Management Committee, R&D TAU Leadership, Global Corporate Affairs, Public Affairs, Corporate Social Responsibility teams, Investor Relations, HR, Legal/Compliance, external vendors, and others.
  • Experience in the healthcare/bio-pharma industry is preferred
  • Strong social media experience preferred.
  • Work experience developing media contacts preferred
  • Experience managing or supporting philanthropic partnerships at a not-for-profit organization or as as a corporate partner
  • Experience managing corporate giving and employee engagement programs (donations, sponsorships, mentoring programs, scholarships, etc.
