Assistant Professor of Communication: Sports Communication and Media Management Job Description: Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Sports Communication and Media Management teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, maintaining an active research agenda, serving on various committees and advising students. Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities include a long-term commitment to build, establish and grow the sports communication certificate into an emphasis consistent with other emphases. Active contribution and participation in undergraduate and graduate program, teaching in area of expertise, research and creative activity, student supervision, and advisement. This position should also complement other emphases and the successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of courses when necessary. The SUU Communication Department is a hybrid of human, strategic and media communication. Expertise in sports communication and media management is required, while a strong communication course background is preferred for success in teaching a broad array of communication classes. Consequently the teaching assignment, both undergraduate and graduate, both face-to-face and online, could include any of the following depending on applicant’s background and strengths: Introduction to Sports Communication, Reporting and Writing for Sports Media, Public Relations in Sports, Sports Administration and Management, Multimedia Management, Issues in Sports, Introduction to Communication, Writing for Communication, Communication in Human Interactions, Introduction to Social Media, Media Law, Media Writing, Media and Society, Communication Research, Writing for Media Audiences, Communication Theory, and Research for Communication Careers

  • Will teach a 4-4 undergraduate load or a 4-4 mix of graduate and undergraduate courses.
  • Conduct scholarly research and creative activities.
  • Curriculum development.
  • Knowledge of appropriate media production equipment and software.
  • Undergraduate student advising and student organization or student media advising.
  • Service as graduate thesis and project chair.
  • Service to the communication department, university and community, as well as participation in related academic and professional organizations is expected.
  • Represent the communication department in a professional manner, with a pleasant disposition, integrity and strong character.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Department Chair. Education and Experience Requirements: Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or ABD in Sports Communication and Media Management (PhD preferred; ABD considered).
  • External evidence of strong teaching at the university level (e.g., include evaluations and feedback). Position may require teaching at the graduate level in the MA in Professional Communication.
  • Industry experience in sports journalism, sports content creation/production and sports information management, which can include evidence of successful sports program development.
  • A promising research and creative activity agenda in sports communication studies.
  • A working knowledge of the latest and most effective communication technologies is highly recommended.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills in working with faculty, staff and students and proven ability to network with industry contacts to help students find internship and career opportunities in sports communication.
  • Prefer knowledge and ability to conduct and teach either qualitative or quantitative research.
