SCHEDULE:

Full Time: Mondays – Fridays – 9:00 AM PT – 5:30 PM PT

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Managing Editor of theshaderoom.com, the Sr. News Writer/Reporter is responsible for researching and developing news content for The Shade Room and related video content. The general nature of this position involves news gathering, reporting, writing, and editing.

The Sr. News Writer/Reporter, is a new role within the company and will have some influence on shaping the news reporting and topics covered on theshaderoom.com.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write news and feature stories for theshaderoom.com.
  • Gather and analyze information about newsworthy events.
  • Conduct original investigative reporting and courtroom coverage.
  • Communicate with court clerks, legal officials on setting up courtroom coverage.
  • Evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Edit and/or assist in editing and proofreading.
  • Work in collaboration with News Group colleagues in TSR Studios to create alignment and synergy on news coverage.
  • Contribute to the execution of social media and video content.
  • Travel 30% of the time to attend court hearings, trials and interviews to complete investigative reporting when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Top-notch investigative reporting skills and practices.
  • Understanding of SEO best practices.
  • Ability to self-edit with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends when needed for special events, breaking news and/or emergencies.
  • Ability to travel when needed.
  • Experience editing the work of other writers.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities and assignments simultaneously; ability to meet deadlines; experience managing both urgent, short-term projects, and complex, longer-term projects.
  • Legal right to work in the US.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism or related field. 3+ years of professional journalism, communications or social media experience, preferably for a high-output and trusted media brand. Experience using WordPress. Experience editing the work of other writers. Experience using Photoshop and/or other photo editing tools.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time (40 hours), nonexempt position. Pay range is $33.65 – $36.05/hour ($70,000 – $75,000 annually). Compensation will be based off of experience and local cost of living.
