Description:

The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska’s most-read news site and newspaper, is looking for an experienced writer and editor who can thrive finding and telling stories in one of America’s most unique sports environments.

Variety is the key here. Anchorage is a city of nearly 300,000 with more than 100 languages in the public school system — and a robust array of high school and college sports in Southcentral Alaska. It’s a place with a deep history of citizen sports, from marathons to mountain runs to cross-country and downhill skiing and snowboarding. It’s a place where basketball rules in small villages and hockey is a big deal. It’s a place where Iditarod dog mushers are well-known sports figures. Alaska has a long history of producing Olympic athletes, and is small enough that you might bump into one on the trails around town.

You’ll write, a lot, but will also be responsible for setting a vision. You’ll do some editing, and work with and manage freelancers.

We’re a scrappy, audience-driven newsroom that’s been awarded three Pulitzer Prizes for public service, the most recent in 2020.

We’re looking for someone who, above all, understands online news and values telling strong stories. This is not a job for beginners. For starters, you need a solid, proven record in the basics: accuracy, context, fairness, clear and engaging writing, the ability to meet deadlines and work in a highly collaborative newsroom. You think critically, see stories, know how to report them and see paths through spin and process. You’re driven to report not just what happened but why.

We have a focus on and commitment to audiences — serving them, listening to them, growing them, retaining them. We’re big enough to have a robust readership and wide, deep reach, but small enough to make decisions quickly and for individuals to have an immediate and significant impact.

We’re independently owned and offer a competitive salary and benefits in a diverse, highly livable city with Alaska and all its outdoor opportunities right out the door. We value a diverse and inclusive workforce, work-life balance and workplace flexibility. We’ll relocate the right candidates.
