The Detroit Free Press ( freep.com ) is seeking a sports assistant editor who is passionate about audience growth and raring to make our products better in one of the most robust sports markets in the country.
The ideal candidate will be versatile enough to handle breaking news on the digital desk; work with reporters to ensure copy is accurate and clean; and willing to learn new skills to lead projects to completion.
The job includes night and weekend work.

We want an emerging leader and talented front-line editor who is digital-savvy and feels empowered to voice new ideas within a hard-working digital news operation. The Free Press sports department has a tremendous digital footprint that reaches up to 30 million readers each month. There is no ambition too big for this role.

We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of a winning team, dedicated to producing sports content with impact, excitement and information. This is an hourly position and perfect for someone who wants to develop a skill set for media management.

Responsibilities

  • Help manage content and social media accounts for freep.com/sports.
  • Send breaking news alerts and optimize content with hyperlinks, videos, photos, photo galleries and perfect SEO headlines.
  • Engage audiences with exciting content, social chatter and storytelling.
  • Edit content for publication-readiness.
  • Use metrics to monitor real-time data and adjust content promotion plans accordingly.
  • Contribute ideas and develop effective action plans for achieving results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in a newsroom is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit.
  • Strong understanding of audience metrics, SEO and social optimization with the goal of growing audience.
  • Effective communicator who works well with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Strong news judgment and headline-writing ability.
  • Able to excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently within a team.
  • Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
  • Applies innovative, creative thinking to support newsroom goals.
  • Presents a quick, conversational writing style that resonates with mobile and social audiences.
