Job overview and responsibilities

The Senior Manager of Media Relations is an integral leader on United’s corporate communications team and will conceive, manage and implement communications campaigns to promote the United brand in the media. A passionate consumer of news, the Senior Manager will identify opportunities for United to engage with journalists across a diverse set of media verticals from national broadcast to technology to lifestyle to travel/aviation and beyond. The Senior Manager will partner closely with executive leadership and oversee proactive communications strategies for a number of business units across United, identifying creative ways to announce new products/services and effectively build the airline’s reputation. A seasoned people-leader, the Senior Manager will have a track record of successfully mentoring and motivating junior talent and will oversee one direct report.

  • Build United’s brand through creative and strategic proactive Media Relations initiatives
  • Develop messaging and amplify strategies for key initiatives and/or products
  • Influence internal/external stakeholders to build United’s brand
  • Provide leadership and manage team members
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists across business, broadcast, lifestyle, technology, travel/aviation and beyond
  • Collaborate closely and effectively with peer groups to advance a common message

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field
  • At least 9 years of communications experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility
  • At least 2 years leading a team
  • Ability to work with senior executives and navigate complex business issues
  • Ability to confidently engage with journalists and spot news trends, risks and opportunities
  • Ability to develop messaging, integrated communications plans and strategies
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to interface with all levels of employees and management as well as with outside agencies
  • Analytical thought process with high integrity
  • Execution and process oriented, forward thinking, diligent and creative
  • Capacity to deliver against quality, timing and cost targets
  • Trustworthy with material confidential information
  • Superior business writing and editing skills

  • Experience working with executives and senior level management
  • Experience successfully pitching and regularly securing earned media stories in top-tier outlets
  • Experience leading agency teams and overseeing large-scale communications campaigns inclusive of earned media, social media, internal communications and paid marketing components
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
