Job Overview

Reporting to the Politics Editor, we’re looking for an intrepid reporter to cover Massachusetts politics and policy at the intersection of voters and democracy. That’s a big piece of journalistic real estate. It includes the governor and other constitutional officers, the legislature, the myriad of agencies and officials that service the commonwealth, as well as those individuals or groups that seek to influence the conduct of government. And then there is the populace, what effect do the laws enacted and regulations issued have on the people of the state, especially those most vulnerable.

This reporter should be able to tap into Massachusetts’ Congressional delegation as the news demands.

This reporter should be immersed in politics, able to make connections between and among developments in the local, state, and national arenas while simultaneously being alert to cultural developments that shape the context of official action.

The ideal candidate should be able to translate the latest news out of the legislature, examine, and explain how policy changes impact the daily lives of our audiences and infuse his/her reports with insights and experiences from the constituents we serve.

We’re looking for someone who can balance the immediate with the long term: to handle breaking daily news for online, radio, and social media while developing longer-term assignments and projects for those same mediums.

In addition, this person — together with other members of the politics team — will be a contributor to our weekly Politics newsletter and will appear (as needed) on radio, television, and video productions.

This reporter is also a general newsroom asset, helping to direct colleagues working on stories with a government angle in the right direction.

  • To put it in informal, colloquial terms: “If it happens on Beacon Hill, or influences the State House, know about it.”
  • Cover general assignment reporting for the newsroom, as needed (required of all GBH News journalists)
  • Skillset
  • Solid news judgment and the ability to prioritize among competing developments.
  • Strong sense of journalistic ethics.
  • Excellent writing and dogged reporting skills.

  • Strong researching skills.
  • The ability to take photos of publishable quality.
  • The desire to work successfully in an open team environment.

  • At least 3 years of experience covering politics
  • A solid track record of enterprise, exclusive and breaking news reporting
