Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic staff writer to join our editorial team. As a staff writer, you should be able to perform thorough research on various topics, deliver high quality content for features, articles, columns, website articles, social media posts, and reviews, and have a keen eye for detail.

Principal Responsibilities

• Write content with readers needs in mind
• Interview key people (witnesses, sources etc.)
• Establish contacts and sources to use in future stories
• Perform research on a variety of topics in the area of emergency dispatch and related areas
• Uncover newsworthy stories
• Ensure your pieces are accurate and objective
• Maintain notes in written or electronic form
• Contribute to content idea generation for publication
• Provides feedback to all internal and external contributors to ensure high quality and mission focus of content
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge Requirements

• To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:
• Proven work experience as a staff writer, reporter, or related role
• Demonstrable portfolio of published articles
• Excellent writing skills in English
• Ability to follow strict deadlines and fact-check information
• Good observation skills
• Broad knowledge of headlines
• Must be well-organized and a self-starter with the ability to manage multiple writing projects
• Must demonstrate solid news judgment skills
• Effective time management
• Working knowledge of overall production process
• Strong editing and writing skills with experience
• Strong communication skills and ability to work well with others
• 2 or more years of experience in an editorial environment, with a strong writing and editing background
• Bachelors degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or related field
