Full Job Description

Job duties:

  • Editing freelancers’ copy for clarity, accuracy, structure and potential libel. The freelancers cover communities in North Texas through original reporting and aggregation.
  • Identifying story ideas, aggregation opportunities and ways to package or reuse our content, which could include some writing.
  • Curating weekly email newsletters with compelling subject lines and reviewing other editors’ newsletters to ensure they’re optimized for reader interest.
  • Enhancing a story’s online presentation by adding or moving photos, adding links and/or embedding video.
  • Using analytics to inform how you write headlines, suggest content ideas and curate newsletters to better connect with audiences.

Key attributes of a candidate:

  • Grammatical precision and a knack for spotting holes in stories and anticipating reader questions.
  • Excellent news judgment and an awareness of how to use audience metrics to determine the types of stories that appeal to North Texas readers.
  • An understanding of SEO best practices and the ability to write enticing headlines.
  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills.
  • The ability to adapt quickly to changing technologies and workflows, and juggle multiple assignments.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field; will consider additional experience in lieu of education.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience in a newsroom.
  • The ability to work daytime hours Monday through Friday for up to 28 hours per week. Work will be performed remotely, but preference will be given to applicants who are based in or familiar with North Texas.
