We are currently seeking an Associate Legal News Editor who will covers specific legal beats and oversees the production of his/her publication(s) on weekly, monthly or bi-monthly frequency.
This role can be performed anywhere within the United States.
Requirements:
- At least one year of full-time paid reporting experience
- Demonstrated reporting and writing skills
Preferences:
- Experience reporting for a legal audience
- Experience working a beat
*Qualified candidates will be asked to complete writing and reporting tests electronically.
Responsibilities:
- Closely monitor practice area(s) for legal news
- Suggest which developments to report and write about and validate suggestions with the manager
- Gather news and identify relevant official documents regarding events and developments in the practice area
- Write news articles for daily upload to the website and inclusion in print publications
- Clearly, digest/explain court opinions and other litigation-related documents following guidance provided by manager
- Use and update existing list of news sources
- Meet all deadlines and oversee production of publications in a timely manner
- Participate in and support marketing strategy with regard to particular publications
- Participate in developing and executing market engagement plan for each product to ensure consistent feedback flow on content direction and market focus
- Attend practice-area meetings and conferences when possible
- Review all available analytics of web-based usage of content with managing editor to help drive content focus
- Recommend new product ideas
Basic Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of hard news reporting experience
- High School Diploma, or GED
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, journalism/communications degree preferred
- Legal experience
- Aggressive news gatherer
- Skilled and speedy news writer
- Ability to understand and explain complex legal topics
- Ability to network with attorney sources, use online and other resources to gather information
- Superior interviewer (on telephone and in person)
- Ability to engage clearly with customers, management, marketing, and sales about the given topic
- Ability to work independently
