Position Purpose:

To develop a Sacred Heart Prep Track & Field program that supports the Mission of the School and its Goals and Criteria, and supports the development of the sport at the Schools Lower and Middle School level.

Essential Job Functions

Head Coach Varsity Program

  • Recruits hires and supervises assistant varsity coaches in collaboration with the Assistant Principal, Athletics and Boys Athletics Director
  • Leads instruction for athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies and physical training necessary to realize a degree of individual and team success
  • Leads, through words and action, resulting in an environment that fosters learning, development of positive character traits, enjoyment of practice/competing and formation of moral values that support the educational philosophy of the Sacred Heart Schools (Goals & Criteria) while also providing an enjoyable experience for the players
  • Works cooperatively with the athletic administration and school community to support the academic and co-curricular aspirations of track & field student-athletes
  • Supervises practices meets and team trips
  • Updates knowledge of technical aspects of the sport and shows a willingness to continue to learn and examine new ideas pertinent to track & field/coaching in general
  • Works cooperatively with the schools athletic trainers and athletic performance coaches
  • Works in a proactive, positive and realistic manner to support the college athletics goals of the members of the team
  • Responsible for coordinating with the Assistant Principal, Athletics and Boys Athletics Director all administrative tasks including uniform/equipment issues and inventory, transportation, game schedules, event timing and all other administrative tasks as determined by the athletics administration
  • Establishes and implements policies for handling issues or concerns that may arise from players and/or parents
  • Attends monthly coaches meetings, preseason parents meeting and annual coaches leadership workshop on the Sacred Heart Schools campus
  • Organizes end-of-season individual player meetings
  • Organizes (with team parents) post-season team party and awards
  • Responsible for overseeing the transportation of track & field student-athletes by school van or bus

Program Director

Responsible for oversight of the entire Track & Field Program including:

  • Recruiting, hiring and supervising assistant coaches
  • Overseeing player technical development
  • Providing team tactical direction to support the development of players to support the vision of the varsity program
  • Overseeing the implementation of an environment that fosters learning, development of positive character traits and enjoyment of the game

Collaborate with the Lower and Middle School Boys Athletics Director to support the development of the Lower Middle School Track & Field program including:

  • Acting as a resource to help identify potential LMS coaches
  • Acting as a resource for LMS track & field team including equipment, competition recommendations, etc.)
  • Develop and/or coordinate with external programs and opportunities for player development including camps, clinics and club teams
  • Abide by all rules of the CIF/CCS and the league as they pertain to this sport

Required Qualifications

  • A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based in it; commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Proven ability to develop, organize and supervise a high school track & field program
  • Previous track & field coaching experience is required;
  • Good role model with demonstrated excellent ethics consistent with Sacred Heart Schools Goals and Criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate with a broad and diverse school community
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good to excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & social media)
  • Demonstrative leadership and facilitative skills
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Must pass a LiveScan fingerprinting background check
  • Applicants must submit a COVID19 vaccine card or agree to weekly COVID-19 testing
  • A clean driving record and valid California drivers license. Will be subject to clearance through the California Vehicle Report and the standards for driving set by SHS insurance underwriters

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent or higher education preferred
  • Previous work experience in independent high school environment preferred
  • Previous work experience as a varsity head track & field coach preferred
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to gain proficiency)

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Works in a potentially stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts
Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or puling of moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 20 to 50 pounds
Ability to travel safely and comfortably across the 63-acre campus
