The Senior Environmental Employment (SEE) Program offers unique opportunities in Scientific, Technical, and Administrative / Office support for individuals age 55 and over to support the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through a grant administered program through National Older Worker Career Center (NOWCC). This is a unique program where your talents, expertise and experience will truly be valued. The EPA provides a wonderful work atmosphere, and you’ll be working side-by-side with EPA staff that are doing important work every day. A background investigation including fingerprinting and identification verification required. Due to COVID-19, this position will be 100% remote until instructions are given on when to safely return to the EPA facility. This is a part-time position. 24 hours per week working Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Hours: 8 am- 4:30 pm. Duties

The purpose of this position is to serve as the initial, primary U.S. EPA Region 8 contact for calls and emails from the public. The enrollee uses the internet, R8 intranet, publications, directories and an Excel information spreadsheet as resources for responses to calls and emails on a multitude of environmental topics. The enrollee uses his/her judgment to determine which calls are to be answered by EPA program staff, referred to state or local environmental agencies or other federal or state agencies. He/she logs calls and emails. The enrollee works with the R8 Information Center Manager and with EPA staff to obtain and update information resources for responding to inquiries. The enrollee answers questions in a clear, concise and professional manner.

  • Efficiently and effectively provides responses to email and phone inquiries from the public. Researches the internet, intranet, publications, directories and other materials (i.e. Excel information spreadsheet) for accurate and current information on environmental topics in order to provide appropriate responses. Notifies Information Center Manager of new emerging trends in inquiries. Maintains awareness of relevant current events. 40%
  • Records responses to inquiries in R8 Information Center Inquiry Log. Record all inquiries for each month into the log by the end of the month. Log is currently in an Excel spreadsheet format; spreadsheet is closed out monthly and a new one is begun. Report any “hot topics” or special inquiries from the Information Center Inquiry Log to the Information Center Manager upon request. 30%
  • Follows instructions provided in the R8 Information Center Protocol document and works with Information Center Manager to keep the protocol current. Interacts with R8 Information Center Manager and EPA staff to obtain and update information resources for responding to inquiries from the public and staff. Meets with Information Center Manager regularly to discuss updates to resources or other topics related to the operation of R8 Information Center. 30%

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 year(s) of experience in verbal and written communication, science, engineering, public health, environmental studies or another related field. OR BA/BS Degree in communications, journalism, public relations, science, public health or environmental studies.

  • Strong customer service skills. Ability to interact with individuals with a wide range of understanding of technical, legal and policy issues. Ability to work patiently and communicate clearly with others who represent diverse points of view. Experience in researching information.
  • Experience required with MS Word, Excel, SharePoint, Fax, Copying Machine, Multiple Phone Lines
  • Microsoft Outlook, Sharepoint, Microsoft Teams, Skype
