Title: Deputy News Director

Position Overview:
SI.com is seeking an Deputy News Director to become a part of our nights/weekends editorial team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for editing copy, story selection, coordinating with writers on emerging news stories and trends to ensure SI remains a timely and up-to-date destination for diehard fans. While this is a remote job, the ideal candidate is based on the West Coast; the role will dual report to the co-Editor-in-Chief and the VP, GM of Growth. Candidates also must be willing to work flexible hours based on seasonality.
Responsibilities:
- Direct a staff of breaking news editors and writers in a rapidly changing news environment
- Coordinate staffing assignments nightly, managing processes and upholding editorial standards.
- Identify breaking news and trending stories; strong understanding of social media preferred
- Edit copy, while assisting deputy editors with story selection and headline creation
- Work closely with senior editorial staff to help establish growth through content programming and strategy
- Collaborate with editors, writers to ensure efficient workflow and positive relationships
- Maintain proficiency and knowledge in latest trends, best practices in editing and how readers consume content.
- Monitor analytics to gauge article performance; work with audience team to recognize content performance trends
- Collaborate in real time with social media team to present content in most appealing way for readers
- Help train new writers to improve their writing and learn the style guide
Requirements
- At least three years of digital experience, ideally working at a sports website
- Ability to thrive in a highly competitive newsroom and adapt quickly to breaking news
- Deep knowledge of a variety of spots; candidates will handle content on multiple topics nightly
- Strong news judgment, paired with excellent organizational, communication and time-management skills
- Proficiency in style, grammar and SEO best practices
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in journalism, communications or English
