Communications Specialist

We are seeking a meticulous and creative Technical Writer to join our contract team supporting workforce management and performance tracking customers at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This role will work closely with clients, stakeholders, and other contract staff to iteratively create newsletters, executive presentations, training documentation, informational emails, web content, and more. The ideal candidate will be adept at distilling complex and technical concepts into clear, engaging, messaging that resonates with target audiences and drives impactful outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Own all phases of the writing process, from initial concept and discovery through drafting, proofing, distributing, and periodically updating documentation for various initiatives and stakeholders.
  • Interview subject matter experts to extract pertinent information for document creation on a variety of subjects.
  • Maintain current work status in Jira and other project management tools as required.
  • Coordinate with team members daily to keep pace with evolving needs and pivot as needed.
  • Adhere to and augment established style guides to ensure deliverables meet quality standards and program needs.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the cyber risk environment as it relates to DHS’ priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience authoring, editing, and maintaining written documentation.
  • Results-oriented with high expectations for quality, accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines while working in an agile environment.
  • Expert-level proficiency in grammar, plain and procedural language, and identifying appropriate communication styles based on audience.
  • Proven ability to summarize complex or technical information.
  • Experience communicating across a variety of digital mediums including email, web, slideshows, and PDF.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience managing several multi-stakeholder projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and client-focused skills coupled with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • Prior experience with DHS or another federal agency.
  • Experience writing for news outlets (print, online, or broadcast) and/or marketing campaigns.
  • Ability to think strategically, identify opportunities, solve problems, and propose solutions.
  • Experience working in crisis mode where narratives shift and rapid response is critical.
  • Experience crafting email campaigns in GovDelivery, MailChimp, or similar.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Forms, SharePoint, Teams, Adobe Acrobat, Jira, and/or Confluence.
  • Basic project management skills including time, risk, priority, and communications management.
  • MUST be a US Citizen, eligible to obtain security clearance; current DHS suitability preferred.

Location: The position is on-site based out of Arlington, Virginia (Ballston), currently working remote until further notice.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $95,000.00 – $105,000.00 per year
