The Chief Development Officer should be an experienced fundraiser with an appreciation for journalism and its essential role in democracy. The mission of the job is to generate major gifts and unrestricted donations to support Poynter’s work and build an endowment. Here’s a description of the Institute and the vital work that needs support: Poynter, a nonpartisan, non-profit 501c3, is a leading brand in training journalists through professional development programs at news organizations and colleges online and in person. Poynter is a leader in training newsroom leaders and media executives in leadership, ethics, storytelling, diversity and inclusion, business models and digital transformation. Clients include television, radio, magazines, newspaper and news websites, college students and professors, and those in the corporate and non-profit sectors.

In the past three years, Poynter has expanded its reach and profile nationally and globally. The story of Poynter is one of supporting democracy and fact-based expression. Independent journalism is under threat and yet democracy can’t work without it. To support that work, the Chief Development Officer will create a short and long term fundraising strategy for the Institute, oversee the cultivation and stewardship of the most significant donors, and identify and generate new donors locally, nationally and internationally. You’ll work with the Poynter Foundation Board to meet fundraising goals you help set. You’ll join the Poynter leadership team and be the public face of this work, informed by a Salesforce CRM and in close collaboration with other Poynter leaders. We’re seeing strong momentum in our donor cultivation and enjoy excellent relationships with foundations and corporate funders. We’re building our development team around that success and want you to lead it. Experience in a journalism/media setting would be helpful, but is not required. The Chief Development Officer must be an avid consumer of news from many sources and someone who believes in, and can convey, journalism’s value for citizens. Candidates need proven experience in major gifts stewardship and a successful track record with fundraising events. The best candidates will have experience creating the reliable infrastructure and courteous interactions that development efforts need and donors notice. The Chief Development Officer will report directly to the Poynter President, and will be part of the Institute’s leadership strategy group.
