Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three to five years of experience in a sports information environment is required. General journalism experience preferred. Previous experience dealing with the media on the local, regional and national level is required Competent photographic skills preferred.
Purpose of Job
This position is vital to Intercollegiate Athletics efforts to adhere to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policies and procedures as it relates to athletics publications, game day management, statistics, media relations and strategic communications.
Scope of Responsibilities
The Assistant Athletics Director for Strategic Communications is responsible for all aspects of electronic media production, strategic communications plans, public relations initiatives and the Brave Sports Network programming relating to the college’s intercollegiate sports: football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men and women’s tennis, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The Assistant Athletics Director for Strategic Communications is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Alcorn State University, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and NCAA. ASU is a member of the NCAA at the Division I level.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop and implement a strategic communications plan which promotes the Alcorn Athletics’ brand.
- Enhance and maintain public relations initiatives that engage students, alumni, fans and sponsors.
- Oversee the Brave Sports Network though coordination of game day production, video board content management and leveraging the streaming platform.
- Produce and manage content on official Alcorn Athletics social media sites.
- Maintenance of statistical data for all sports.
- Maintenance of historical records and data for all sports.
- Hiring and supervising clock operators, statisticians, student worker, public address announcers, etc. for select sports.
- Production of game day programs and maintenance of Athletics Web site.
- Establish and foster relationships with sports reporters from the local media outlets.
- Provide media passes and media seating upon request for athletic events.
- Compile statistics for all in-season sports following events.
- Supervise staff to provide game management for all sports.
- Responsible for the compilation and publishing of Athletic Department fact sheets.
Qualifications

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Experience with coordinating the production and directing live sporting events.
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Computer skills including; Desktop Publishing, Internet website maintenance and Statcrew/The
- Automated Scorebook statistical software packages are strongly preferred.
- Experience in management and promotion of regional and national tournaments is helpful.
- A strong commitment to the Student-Athlete concept and a working knowledge of the NCAA rules and regulations are required
