On names, letter.ly vs letterly.net, and our Libyan domain registration (10/12/2011)

Our service started out as Letter.ly. The .ly part refers the country code domain that's assigned to Libya. Many other prominent web sites also use .ly domains. Earlier this summer, we had an issue with our Libyan domain registrar, and we were unable to renew our domain before it expired. To keep the service running, we quickly switched everything over to letterly.net. The total downtime was about a day. A few days later, we were able to renew the registration for letter.ly, but we kept our site's messaging focused on letterly.net.

Now, our branding will resume using letter.ly, but both domains will continue to be supported. For our letter authors, you can use either the letter.ly or letterly.net email addresses to send your letters. For subscribers, you'll notive that your letters now come from letter.ly.

Some of the reporting about our abrupt name change incorrectly implied that Letter.ly had disappeared entirely, and we're still hearing residual comments about those stories -- so, let us assure you that we are alive and well! If you have questions or comments about any of this, please get in touch.
